Khama is a “disgrace to the country” – BCP

In a hard-hitting comment, the leader of Botswana Congress Party Youth League (BCPYL), Tumiso Rakgare has described President Ian Khama as a “disgrace” to the country.

He was speaking to the media this week in response to President Khama’s remarks about the behaviour of University of Botswana students. When officially opening the just-ended Botswana Democratic Party National Youth Executive Committee (BDP NYEC) elective congress, President Khama said, “Bana ba UB ga ba na maitseo.” This comes after the students had vandalised school properties over delayed payment of living allowance.

Rakgare said President Khama as a leader has failed the youth of the country and he is a “disgrace to this country.”“For him to go and talk about the problems at UB as far as Tsabong is a sign that we have a leadership problem in this country. Ga re na tautona gothelele. The position of Head of State is vacant because this man is a disgrace to this country,” said Rakgare.

He added, “You cannot expect an elder, if there are problems in house, to go and talk about them in the street. President Khama should have gone to UB and met with the students and see that we have a crisis.”  Rakgare said as the youth league they are happy about the behaviour of the students. He called on UB management to open the university with immediate effect.

Last week Botswana National Front (BNF) Spin-doctor, Justin Hunyepa said UB closure was a clear case of poor corporate governance and the general failure by the BDP led government to effectively and efficiently run public institutions and the country at large. “For years now, government sponsored students have been complaining of late payment of allowances and underpayments. Students have been complaining about the monopolised bookstore, which together with the only supermarket on campus are extremely expensive.

They have complained about hygiene and the quality of food at the institution’s refectory. This plethora of complaints has not been addressed for years now, though communicated to relevant authorities,” said Hunyepa. He said Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology has dismally failed as all levels of the education system have since completely collapsed under the BDP led government.

“Recently the nation received the ever poor and embarrassing results of the Junior Certificate Examinations (JCE). The awaited Botswana General Certificate Secondary School Examinations (BGCSE) are expected to be equally bad this year,” he said.
